![]() I wouldn't say it is a favorite series, but Ultima is something I keep going back to. It was nice to see the series expand to other settings, so I wish they had done more with that concept (the Martian Dreams game is supposed to be quite underrated). I didn't get to play much of Ultima VI either but I did check out Worlds of Ultima: The Savage Empire. It would have saved everyone a lot of trouble. It's always bugged me how they didn't just re-use the UO engine for Ultima IX instead of their failed experiment in early 3D gaming. Never played Ultima Online, although I wanted to do so. In many ways, Ultima was the granddaddy of the Elder Scrolls series. Even reading the big manual that came with the game (and written by Batlin of all characters) was fairly enjoyable. Playing around with the cheats also made for great chaotic fun. It had a pretty good story about the corruption and manipulation of cults, all things considered, but you could also just run outside and explore an absolutely massive world without always being railroaded back to the plot.Īll the NPC schedules and other simulation elements were impressive too. Utima VII really opened my eyes to what you could do in a computer game. I still remember that demo that came with the game, and its nice, because most of the videos I find online about UO look nothing like the game that I played back in the day. Hearing that tune just brings back so much nostalgia. I would regale all my friends at school at lunch with the crazy adventures and shit that I would be doing in the game, and they would all be highly entertained at my various attempts at Pking or luring people out to the graveyard to kill them or trying to exploit them for gold, as only a young teenager could lol. Back in that time, felt like everyone was so paranoid about that stuff. The absolute struggle begging my parents to allow them to put in their credit card info so I could pay the monthly fee, I'm still shocked I managed to convince them to put it online. Probably wouldn't have gone great though, as I doubt my PC could have run it at the time. A part of me always wonders though, if I missed out on some great action with EQ, especially playing it in that era. I actually remember kinda debating it a bit, but in the end I stuck with UO, and had a fantastic time. My first MMO, I still remember going to the store to buy it, some time in late 1999, and going to the PC gaming section of the store, and wanted to buy UO, and the sales clerk was like, you could buy that old game, or this sick new game with 3d! graphics, called Everquest. Was one of my favourite gaming experiences ever. Never played any of the regular Ultimas, just was addicted to Ultima online.
